Selection can be thought of as mask, and mask and channels are known as gray-scale image in Photoshop. Gray-scale images are editable with painting tools, editing tools and filters.
In alpha channel one can save selection as an editable gray-scale mask and once selection is saved in alpha channel he can reload it at any time.
In alpha channel, selection is defined as shades of gray scale from 0 to 255 gray scale level. White represents the selected pixels and black represents unselected pixels and anything in between white and black is partially selected and or unselected.
By duplicating a color channel and editing the channel with painting and editing tools and filters one can create selection mask. In graphics world, it is known as channel mask. Gray pixels are most like there if alpha channel is whether made from selection with feathered or anti alias, or duplicating and editing color channel.
Generate and edit an alpha channel

You can edit and modify your alpha channel in quick mask mode. To do so go to composite channel’s visibility just click the RGB channel, press Q to go to in quick mask mode, take your brush and by painting with white you can add more area in your selection.
Alternatively, you can refine your selection further, paint with white brush adds area to selection and paint with black brush removes area from selection.
Select hair in channel
Selecting fly away hair is considered one of the toughest thing to select in Photoshop. Refine Edge tool can be useful to select fly away hair, but sometime you need to refine the selection manually and in this situation channel masking or alpha channel masking comes handy.
Open your image in Photoshop
Go to channel plate. Find out the contra-sty channel among three channels Red, Green and Blue. You need to find out that what has more contrast between the hair and the background. You need to separate hair and background depending on contrast so, you can ignore rest of the thing except hair. Here, blue channel has the best contrast.
To make selection depending on contrast duplicate the Blue channel by dragging it to new channel. Active the blue channel copy by selecting the channel. Here one thing worthy to mention; in some cases, it is easy to select background, so do it later on you can invert the selection. Active the Blue copy by selecting the channel. To maximize the contrast between selection and background use curve or level or threshold whatever you comfortable feel with.
Take your lasso tool and select the area need to refine the mask fill it with white or black by pressing Ctrl+Del to fill with white and Alt+del to fill with black as per necessity. Some areas need to refine by hand, in this case take your brush, lower down opacity and paint with white if you need to add and to remove paint with black.
When the refinement of mask is done click on RGB palate, then Ctrl+click will activate the selection.
Now you can remove background from image and add new background whatever you wish.
